Susan is a born-and-bred New Yorker. She earned her Bachelor’s and Masters degrees from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and a doctorate in history from Carnegie Mellon University. Her dissertation focused on women’s role in the quest for justice in United States history.

Susun and Marvelle Thompson collaborated on the book "Blessed Are These Hands", where they asked each woman to let them photograph her hands holding something she considers "sacred, holy, an outward representation of her deepest self." BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS shows photographs and tells stories of these women holding something that represents her deepest values. The book highlights women's sense of the sacred and chronicles the breadth of women’s spirituality today.

Susan Kullmann sees BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS as an historical document as well as art, a record of early 21st-century women’s spiritual values. and the book allows Susan to blend her appreciation of photography and light with her ardent interest in the historical and contemporary meaning of women’s lives.

"BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS combines my appreciation of capturing an instant with a photograph and computer expertise with a long-term professional and personal interest in the history and contemporary meaning of women’s lives. I have enjoyed working with photographic images for most of my adult life, from black and white darkroom work to elaborate slide programs for high school and college students to extensive online web albums for academic programs, history lectures, vacations and reunions, even my son’s wedding.

In most cases, my photos spoke for themselves, sometimes given more meaning by accompanying lectures, music, or text on a website. The subjects of BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS comments about their “portrait” accompany the images, which personalizes and enhances each picture. Their remarks are as varied as what they hold in their hands. As a whole, the collection suggests the depth and range of women’s spirituality in the early 21st century."

Currently, Susan is managing director of DoctorGeek, a web development, computer training and consulting firm. Her career includes positions at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona as Director of the Faculty Computing Support Center and instructor of online, hybrid, and traditional courses; at Claremont McKenna College as an educational technologist; and at California State University, Long Beach as a history and women's studies instructor.

Susan gives people the confidence and knowledge they need to make the leap into the world of modern technology. She designs and delivers workshops in using computer software, including digital image editing with PhotoShop. At California State Polytechnic University Pomona, Susan developed an extensive academic technology support program for faculty.

She also has taught history and women’s studies there, and at California State University at Long Beach. She is a member of the Organization of American Historians and the Western Association of Women Historians.

Susan is a Professional member of Women in Photography International. Her family has always valued photographs; in fact, family photos from the 19th century line her hallways. She first started shooting with a Brownie camera in elementary school. She’s gone through many cameras since.
