Susan is a born-and-bred New Yorker. She earned her Bachelor’s and Masters degrees from the State Susun and Marvelle Thompson collaborated on the book "Blessed Are These Hands", where they asked each woman to let them photograph her hands holding something she considers "sacred, holy, an outward representation of her deepest self." BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS shows photographs and tells stories of these women holding something that represents her deepest values. The book highlights women's sense of the sacred and chronicles the breadth of women’s spirituality today.
"BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS combines my appreciation of capturing an instant with a photograph and computer expertise with a long-term professional and personal interest in the history and contemporary meaning of women’s lives. I have enjoyed working with photographic images for most of my adult life, from black and white darkroom work to elaborate slide programs for high school and college students to extensive online web albums for academic programs, history lectures, vacations and reunions, even my son’s wedding. In most cases, my photos spoke for themselves, sometimes given more meaning by accompanying Currently, Susan is managing director of DoctorGeek, a web development, computer training and consulting firm. Her career includes positions at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona as Director of the Faculty Computing Support Center and instructor of online, hybrid, and traditional courses; at Claremont McKenna College as an educational technologist; and at California State University, Long Beach as a history and women's studies instructor. Susan gives people the confidence and knowledge they need to make the leap into the world of modern technology. She designs and delivers workshops in using computer software, including digital image editing with PhotoShop. At California State Polytechnic University Pomona, Susan developed an extensive academic technology support program for faculty.
Susan is a Professional member of Women in Photography International. Her family has always valued photographs; in fact, family photos from the 19th century line her hallways. She first started shooting with a Brownie camera in elementary school. She’s gone through many cameras since. BLESSED ARE THESE HANDS fulfills a vow to honor women in a creative way: with portraits of women's hands holding something that represents their deepest values.
